The Israel Center for Educational Innovation (ICEI) is a non-profit organization that implements its Whole School Improvement Program to turn around underachieving Israeli elementary schools with significant numbers of Ethiopian-Israeli students. ICEI’s intervention dramatically raises the achievement levels of all students in participating schools by upgrading teaching, improving school leadership and management and creating a school culture of success and high expectations. ICEI empowers Ethiopian-Israeli parents to become full partners in their children’s education and infuses participating schools with appreciation for Ethiopian-Jewish culture.
ICEI gives Ethiopian-Israeli children a strong foundation for future educational advancement.
ICEI’s program is anchored in a proven model of literacy instruction: Balanced Literacy using the Workshop Method of Instruction developed by the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project (TCRWP) of Columbia University, which is a partner in operating ICEI. ICEI schools are affiliate schools of TCRWP, which provides training and professional support to ICEI staff.
ICEI gives Ethiopian-Israeli children a strong foundation for future educational advancement, which is critical if they are to have an opportunity to break the cycle of poverty as adults.
Today ICEI is exploring ways to adapt its program to the teaching of mathematics and other subjects.
